Why is there a term called Vegan?
Before you answer

What I mean, is this.

At one time and place in this world, one man or woman decided that they would not consume anything that was derived from an animal. He/She called themselves a Vegan (perhaps the term came later, but thats not the point).

Now, people are attaching themselves to this definition of a lifestyle (it goes way beyond diet) without deciding for themselves what individual items they will/will not eat.

It seems like people are striving to become defined as a vegan rather than people deciding on the individual items logically for the impact that they will have. It seems like they "drank the Koolaid" rather than researched the topic.

The logic of omitting honey from the diet rises to the top of the "what the heck" list.

Honey does not kill bees. Furthermore, Bee farms are CRITICAL in agriculture all around the world. Without Bee farms, half the world would starve from the drop in crop yields. These bees that polinate the crops that vegans eat would not be around if not for the honey industry. I feel that this is one of those "Drink the Koolaid" items.

Milk, I get. The veal industry is largely the result of the dairy industry and this one makes real sense.

Sugar and Gelatin. Does not make sense to avoid. Mainly because the animal products used here have ZERO impact on killing animals. 99% of animal bones (bone char used in sugar) are disposed of. That 1% or less of these waste products are simply a biproduct that is used that will otherwise be thrown away. A cow or any other animal has never been killed because of a bone char shortage. So, this is a ZERO IMPACT item. If no impact, then why avoid it? Another "drink the Koolaid" item.

So, can you explain to me in a logical manner why you think I am wrong about these items?

It’s just another hipster bullshit buzzword that happens to be in-style now.

I hope you crazies enjoy malnourishing yourselves.

dude, you cant ask why words are words.
Thats like asking how the first guy who used the word "man" came up with it.
all i can say is look up the etymology of "vegan" if you havent already.

your not, you are absolutely right!! Well said!!!

Dude, vegans are seriously f*cking nuts (yeah, that’s my technical term for it). What do you expect. As a psychologist, I would say at least 85% of them have serious DSM related disorders.

A vegetarian eats animal by products such as cheese. A vegan does not. A vegan is a strict vegetarian.

I sort of agree with you. For some people, being vegan is like a religion.

When I discuss my diet, I say "vegan" because it best describes how I eat. However, I am not a "vegan".

I can’t speak for all vegans, but personally, I’ve thought about all of these things. I thought about what I wanted to omit from my diet and what I didn’t. I am a full vegan. Here is my explanation of the honey thing. First of all, just because the process doesn’t kill the animal, does not make it alright. I like to think that all animals have the right to not be exploited. Bees work hard for to produce their honey and we use it for our own gain. It’s not like we’re doing them a favor by harvesting their honey. Saying that, I can understand why it doesn’t seem like a big deal. Admittedly, I care much more about dairy cows and animals used for meat.

With the sugar and gelatin thing, to me it’s a simple matter of supply and demand. If we don’t consume gelatin or sugar filtered with bone ash, then the demand won’t go up for it, perhaps then animals will not be killed for it. I’m sure that vegans don’t have much of an impact in the gelatin/sugar market, if what you said about zero impact is true, but for me it’s better to be safe about it and get vegan alternatives.

I don’t think you’re wrong about these things, you just have a different opinion than vegans. Pretty good questions actually.

I absolutely agree with you. I am very stubborn when it comes to the subject of Veganism. I am all for eating healthy, although I do know there are things like iron that are found in meat and are important to our bodies. Also, animals are not "killed" for their byproducts, it is a byproduct and comes after the harvest of their meat.

Animal abuse is one thing, but industry is another. I work in the animal agriculture industry and understand why certain things are done certain ways. To the untrained eye, some of the things that are done may seem inhumane. But when organizations such as PETA belittle the industry, uneducated individuals tend to believe them and can sabotage an industry. We hear about animal abuse and such all the time and this affects the prices in the markets. People would not do anything to harm the income of their business.

You also hear about things such as "anti-biotics" and "growth hormones" added to milk and other products. This is very rare and is not done in most places that widely distribute their product. The "Organic" market can be a crock and is just a big money maker based on name. Sometimes their products taste even worse.

My main subject on "Vegan" is that one cannot truthfully be a Vegan if they live by their terms of no use or consumption of meat products. As you stated above, that 1% of the animal would be disposed of, so why not use it. This is put in to household into household products and things we use in our daily lives. Unless you live in a tree somewhere and are naked, virtually everything you use is made from animal products, therefore, one cannot truly be a Vegan.

Ok, done. And I am so opinionated on this topic, I have no idea if it even makes sense :)

Hindus and Hare Krisnas have a strict reverence for cows. And yet they still consume various yogurts, cheeses and other dairy products. So go ahead and put that on your "what the heck" list.

What you need to realize is that vegans don’t eat gelatin (made of animal bones) and dairy and eggs and other animal products because they simply don’t think it is good for you, and that it is unneccessary and unhealthy.

Does that clear some things up?
That’s why I’m a vegan

the term vegan was coined later on. It is a shortened version of the word vegetarian.
I dont see it as a "drink the koolaid" concept simply because since almost all vegans are vegan because of a wish to make an impact on the meat undistry, they all want to cut out the same foods.
also you can still eat sugar and honey and be a vegan.
I choose to eat white sugar but not honey, insects are animals too, and even though they are not killed, they are harmed in the process of making honey. also it is an animal product and that is the whole point of being a vegan!
so my logical manner of explaining why I disagree with you is my own strory….
I was raised eating meat until I was 13 and my whole family cut out meat….we decided it was cruel to animals and bad for us.
8 years go by and just about everyone in my family has thought about being vegan but no one tried it yet…
I woke up one day and started really REALLY thinking about what eggs are…. I found that when I didnt sugar coat it…I couldnt eat it! so there went eggs….
I did my research, read up on milk and dairy….then found that is wasnt so appitizing…..same for honey and butter and other animal products until I was full vgean without even trying!

iI dont know if that makes any sense…but my point is, its not just a dont eat this, dont eat that, drink the koolaid, fallow the sheep, kind of thing. all of things that are not considered vegan are not vegan for a reason. If you are a vegan, you will not want to ea these things….its shouldnt be a deprivation. idont think most vegans cut these things out of there diet because they want "be a vegan"…ot at least thats not I did….it just kinda happens
